Below is a list of the largest origin and destination airports in the US. This list does NOT include connecting traffic, only traffic originating for or destined to the airport(s) in question. The list includes international and domestic traffic. The list is for all airports in a metro area (ex. JFK, LGA, EWR, HPN for NYC/LAX, BUR, ONT, SNA for Los Angeles). Top 15 are all very impressive in their own way with Orlando, Las Vegas, and Phoenix especially. Beyond 15 and with the notable exclusion of Honolulu and Salt Lake City (since they punch at or above their weight), the rest are all laggards for their size.
Someone over in Airliners.net posted this information today.
I believe the stats for Miami include MIA, FLL and PBI. New York includes EWR, LGA and JFK, too for example. Boston, Atlanta, Denver, and Detroit are examples of stand alone airports for those stats.
MIDT data (the international part) is not accessible to the public. Because of my job, I do have access to the data. The data I used was from 2012.

I'm surprised to see Miami ahead of Chicago. Are you including Midway for Chicago?
Yes. The difference between Chicago and Miami is that Miami gets about double the amount of international traffic while Chicago gets more domestic traffic. Of course, Miami's international market is extremely dependent on South/Central America.
Not a surprise, the most domestically and internationally sought after cities by market demands and air route traffic will be up to Seattle's rank or higher above 60K.
These are the same cities that have the market demands to support more than 10 foreign flag carriers or HQ hubs of Delta, American, and United.
Thanks for posting this here. I too was surprised with Miami being ahead of Chicago. But I guess what puts Miami over Chicago is Miami being a bigger tourist destination and Miami having so much O/D traffic to Latin America and even places like the Bahamas and Cuba.
