The China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 was flying from Kunming to Guangzhou when it plunged to earth in Guangxi province and caught fire.

The number of casualties and reason for the crash are not yet known. Rescuers have seen no signs of survivors.

Chinese airlines generally have a good safety record - the last major accident took place 12 years ago.

The crash has caused shock in China where President Xi Jinping has ordered an immediate investigation to determine the cause. China Eastern Airlines has reportedly grounded all its 737s.

I don't know much about commercial planes, but how does one go into a nearly-vertical nosedive like that by accident? Does this vertical type dive happen much (of planes that have crashed)? I watched the documentary on the Boeing 737-8 MAX; it was unbelievable the damage greed can do. I know this one wasn't a MAX plane, but could it have been a similar type of failure that would cause a mid-air vertical dive?

Never seen anything like that video. Those poor people.

China didn't have aviation accidents for many years. It was considered very safe.
Wonder what happened...
I doubt anyone realized what was going on before all were dead.

Boeing 737-800 with 132 people on board crashed in mountains in southern China on a domestic flight on Monday after a sudden descent from cruising altitude. Media said there were no signs of survivors.
China Eastern said the cause of the crash was under investigation. Such accidents typically involve multiple factors.
Media cited a rescue official as saying the plane had disintegrated and caused a fire destroying bamboo trees.

The disaster comes as Boeing seeks to rebound from several overlapping crises including the coronavirus pandemic and crashes involving its 737 MAX model. Shares in the planemaker were down 3.7% at 19:50 GMT.

China Eastern has grounded its fleet of 737-800 planes, state media reported.

At that speed, mercifully, people would be knocked out cold.

It didn't seem like the plane was that old (7 years, I believe), of course you still need to properly maintain it and I haven't heard anything about bad weather either. Since it crashed on land, they should be able to find the flight data recorder.

Speed doesn't knock people out; acceleration knocks people out.
