Please help me understand this? African Americans comprise the largest group in Baltimore City, and we have to travel 50 minutes south for more progressive cultural offerings.

Why is that?

I'm not Black, but maybe JUST because it's DC? Only thing that makes sense to me. Myself, I can't stand DC and hate when I have to go there for anything.

IMO there's certain cities that come to mind when I think of Black culture. DC is definitely one of them, but Baltimore is not. You'd think it would be, seeing as how it's home to three HCBU's

More generally... you have more African American Professionals living and working in and around DC. Happy Hour in most DC haunts you find a wide range of African Americans.. from ultra professional poltico types, consultants et al to blue collar and on to college students. Baltimore is mostly a blue collar city...which is not a negative thing.. but you have less "professionals". In DC happy hour is often more about networking, connecting and sealing the deal.. In Baltimore.. people just want to unwind and it seems more casual.. Diff'rent Strokes for Diffrent Folks I guess..

Baltimore does have a few places for AA professionals.. I have noticed a new place called Phaze 10 on N. Howard Street across from Maryland General in Mt Vernon.. It seems like an older but professional AA crowd.

While Baltimore City is majority African American at 64%, Washington DC is the "Chocolate City" for a reason. The Baltimore suburbs are a heavy majority white, while DC is still majority African American and then you have another million people in PG County that is heavily African American. So naturally DC has a stronger African American culture, probably only comparable by Atlanta I would guess. They also have a bigger middle upper class because of their economy.

Not sure what you are looking for, but no matter the ethnicity, Baltimore is a jeans and a ball cap type place. Rich or poor, not many people like getting that dressed up here.
