Harnesses and holsters to carry multiple pistols, a shotgun on your back, a rifle slung on your shoulder, bandoleers to carry 1,000 rounds of ammo, knee pads, gas masks, infra-red goggles, ......

Seems a bit more than your average civilian 'basic self-defense' load out to me.

Obviously I may have known folks who do have such civilian BOBs.

Having been career military there have been times when my profession included wearing a bullet-proof vest, wearing a pistol, gas mask, etc.

What I have done and seen, has been primarily males doing this.

Even when I did it as my profession, the few females that worked for me, tended to be 'hesitant' and needed help getting fitted up, sometimes for weeks before they became accustomed to adjusting the straps of their own harnesses, etc.

What caught my attention was a female who clearly already had the training of how to do it.

True story. Several years ago a politician showed up to do his thing. I was outside looking like a farmer in my jeans without knees, Muck boots and a tank top, hair up, outright grubby. The farrier was here and working on a horse when he pulled in. When he noticed the farrier was a woman he said, "That's a woman! I didn't know they could do that." ahem. Seriously. Twenty-first century, you know? Try to keep up. He'd probably pass out if he knew we carry guns.

Me and my big mouth blurted, "They let us vote too." He left quickly.

My apology.

I did not intend any insult.

It was not my desire to put down any of you wonderful females, or any females for that matter.

You are all wonderful and we do appreciate you.

Women like when things go BOOM just as much as men do! When I was in my early teens and learned to shoot a gun, I could outshoot EVERY boy in my neighborhood. Needless to say, I didn't any boyfriends amongst that group!

I've never been fond of guns, but so many of our friends here have their conceal/carry permits. I'm getting used to it...I would think it would be more useful for when you are wandering out in the woods alone versus having it with you while you're just going in to town here in Maine. I've thought about it and I think I would tend to get a false sense of security if I had a permit...knowing there are people out there with bigger and badder equipment -- sort of like I would feel going out on the ocean in an inflatable boat. I tend to feel safer here in Maine though for the most part. But I sure do miss my rottweiler we had for 14 years. When we made trips outside of Maine he actually saved us from being robbed on 2 occasions even though it was just his look that was intimdating, as he was very good and sweet dog.
