Verlander has given two home runs...so the Astros are still trailing, but he has fanned 11 through 5 , blowing past his personal season best of 290 with his third of the game to hit 291, and then blowing through his 6th of the game to reach 3000 for his career.

He's at 299....1 more for 300 for the regular season.

Only one pitcher has thrown 300 in a season and tthe 3000th of his career in the same season...Randy Johnson.

Only one time have two players thrown 300+ strikeouts each on the same team in the same year.....Johnson and Schilling for the 2002 Diamondbacks.

That same year, both won at least 20 games (24 for Johnson, and 23 for Schilling), so if Verlander gets one more strikeout (even if the Astros lose), and Cole wins tommorow, then Cole and Verlander will be the second teammates to notch 20 or more wins and 300 or more strikeouts in the same season.

ETA: While I wa typing that post, Bregman walked, Diaz got hit by a pitch, and then Reddick homered, so the Astros lead 5-3 .

Seconds ago Verlander strikes out Calhoun for his 300th strikeout of the season

__________________________________________________ ________________________________

ETA: A couple of seconds before the first pitch to the Astros in the 7th, the announcers let us know that Hinch just told Verlander that that's it for the game. (Makes sense...he's got the win (unless a reliever loses it), he got the 3000th SO for his career, and 300th for the season...no more regular season goals....start resting him for his first start in the post season.

If they hang in for the win, they're assured.....

1. Home field advantage for the World Series (if they get there)

2. Ending the season at least 50 games over 500.

I heard on the radio earlier today that the Astros are the first of the three year in a row 100 win teams to win more games in the second year than the first, and then win more in the third year of that stretch than in the second year.

Game ended a few seconds ago ......Astros won 6-3 (106-55 for the year with 1 game left)

Astros win Game 1 of their ALDS by a score of 6-2 .

When asked what went wrong for his Tampa Bay Rays, manager Keven Cash invented a word.

He said "We got Verlandered" .

Verlander pitched 7 innings....no runs, 1 single, 3 walks, 100 pitches, and 8 strikeouts in notching the win.

Any chance Osuna gets left off the roster, should we make the ALCS?

I doubt that something that rash is going to happen. Last night was just an anomaly. If you recall, he got us out of the eighth inning last night with no problem. Just couldn't get a rhythm going in the ninth to get three more outs.

I would not start Cole in game 5. I wouldn't have started Verlander in game 4 either. The Astros are good enough that they can split two games without them, and that's all that was needed. Burning them both on Yankee rresd days just plays into the Yankees hands.

I think you could argue not starting JV yesterday but you have no choice now with Cole. You lose you go home. That's not acceptable.

These Rays are a feisty bunch. Their payroll is the lowest in MLB by far, and just a fraction of the top teams...like the Stros.

In my business driven mind, no matter what happens in game 5 of this series, the Rays are winners. To be where they are on that payroll is beyond belief.

I wouldn't exactly discount Jose Urquidy, who has a better chance at getting through five innings than Wade Miley would have. I'm amazed that he didn't get the Game 4 start, but that's not important now. Don't be surprised if he gets the nod for Game 1 (assuming the Astros advance) and Verlander in Game 2. Now, Greinke isn't bad every time out. He hasn't really had two bad outings in a row since coming to Houston, and you can't rule him out for Game 1, either.
