Ohio, Florida, Texas, and California are the four most popular states for football. What states are known for basketball?

North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Kansas...yet somehow basketball is stigmatized as something else entirely

I am sorry but its only Indiana and Kentucky! I have lived in 40+ states to include the above listed. In IU and UK, its a religion, those folks are basketball fanatics to the maximum. Rain, sleet, snow and no matter the temperature I could stir up a basketball game. Its truly that crazy.

The two that come most to mind are Indiana and North Carolina. Indiana kind of speaks for itself, and North Carolina has produced a lot of great players (Michael Jordan, Walt Bellamy, Bob McAdoo, Tracy McGrady, Antawn Jamison, James Worthy) and is always well represented on the college scene.

Also, not to veer the thread off topic, but I dispute your ranking California as a top four football state. It's the biggest state, so due to sheer size it's produced great players and college teams, but when you factor in population, college ball doesn't have as big of a following as it does in the South, and places like Louisiana are bigger hotbeds for producing players.

My home state of Indiana is the world capital of basketball. EVERYBODY plays here. It seems almost everybody has a hoop in their driveway as well....and high school basketball games are literally community gatherings.

North Carolina, on the Collegiate level. It's all about UNC-Duke here. Since, I'm a transplant, I'm not a loyal fan of either, but I pretty root for UNC in any sport, as I consider them the state's official college team, and I also REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hate Duke

Did you seriously put the greatest player of all time and the biggest dud in the modern era (T-Mac) in the same list?

Really?

In a conversation about all-time greats, I wouldn't put them together, but this is just a list of noteworthy players to come out the state. Call him a dud all you want, but I bet you 95% of prospective players would kill for Tracy's career.
