I'm looking for the following:

(In order of priority)

1. Great public schools (1st, 9th & 10th graders)
2. Will commute to BR daily so traffic is a consideration
3. Flooding issues

I've read elsewhere that Prairieville and Gonzales are good choices but the threads were a few years old.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

The best public schools in this area are in the Zachary School District. Followed by Livingston, and then Ascension.

Do you know where in Baton Rouge you will be working? We can tell you alot more about the commute then.

Flooding issues occur here and there. There are a few more problems with flooding in Ascension parish than with your other choices, mostly because of poor planning. That isn't to say that it is restricted to Ascension Parish--growth in the Baton Rouge area went pretty much unchecked until recently, which created problems with drainage, highways, and public services.

I agree with MetroBTR on all points. I have my child go to private because public schools in Baton Rouge kinda stink!

Zachary and Central are the best. The only public high school I would recommend that is actually within the East Baton Rouge Parish school system is Baton Rouge High. Maybe.

I went to Central Middle and Central High and I feel that I recieved a very good education. The biggest difference is that the teachers and parents actually care about the students and get more involved in their learning. Most schools in the EBRP school system do not have anywhere near the same level of community involvement.

West Feliciana Parish Schools are quite good (St. Francisville area) . . .commute is as long as Prairieville/Gonzales - traffic wise - easier

Hey I am new to City-Data. Can anyone help me with some information. I plan on moving to teach in New Orleans. However I don't want to commute a hour and a half from Baton Rouge, and I dont want to live in New Orleans! Can anyone suggest some nice surrounding areas that might be within 30 to 45 minutes to New Orleans? Thanks so much!

Thanks,

Livingston Parish(Denham Springs,Walker) has great public schools but if ur communting to br its not far but the traffic ges pretty backed up but they are working on that right now by widening the interstate where it gets bad so it will soon be all better. But if your looking for good public school and community i would go with Livingston parish schools they have a very high success rate and AWESOME teachers who take that extra time with the students and go above and beyond for every student.

mrj, what are your priorities when searching for housing? What do you want to have convenient access to? What do you want to spend? Looking to rent or buy? Got kids?
