I was buying a jeep from an individual, got a certified check for a certain amount from our 401K, went to put in the bank and pay the people as they were leaving for the mainland in a couple of days. THis is a Friday afternoon, too. Long story short, they loaned me the money instead of clearing the check. I had a loan for a substantial amount of money in less than an hour, but they would not cash that check from our 401K! never did figure that one out.
Certified checks and cashier's checks are no longer "safe". They are very frequently forged. I don't fault anyone or any bank for wanting to ensure that the funds clear.

Default Same type nonsense...

Konakat, your situation is typical. We closed our account the day I actually had to argue w/one of their tellers about 'holding a cash deposit for 3 days'. That was it. Called for a manager and closed the account on the spot.

It really cracked me up because, I was on the phone to them while my husband and the other people were there at the bank. In exasperation at 4:30 pm I said "Well for heaven's sake, can you just loan me the money till this thing clears?" and she says "oh sure! no problem!" No qualifying, no credit check, no nothing. So I zoomed over there to sign on the dotted line and get things done!

I still say an 8 day hold is ridiculous when one phone call for 30 seconds to the other bank (in this case WF) can confirm that the check is legit.
