Yup, and the one in Hilo is already gone, being replaced by a Walgreen's.

And at the other end of my current orbit, Austin TX, all the Borders there are closing too.

They're closing about 1 of every 3 stores.

I bet they will have awesome closing sales. I love getting books for super cheap.

Sadly bookstores and libraries will slowly die off as electronic books take over.

I think paper books will be around a long time, even here in paradise where paper books mildew.

But truthfully, although I was in Borders all the time 10 years ago, I literally cannot remember the last time I was in one.

And the main reason? Here's an example... I needed to buy a book for a class I'm teaching, so I looked for one, selected it, bought it online from Amazon Thursday night, it was shipped from Indiana Friday, and it was in my PO Box in Volcano 3pm Saturday, and I got notified on my phone so I knew to go pick it up... and the whole thing cost less than the book would have cost over the counter at Borders... IF they had it in stock, which would have been highly unlikely.

Their inability to capitalize on the eBook market (or, rather, their failure to recognize the technology before their competition) sunk Border's. They are a dinosaur mired in the tar pit of their own making.

Ironically, I purchased my first ebook reader (a Sony PRS-505) at the Borders in Hilo around three years ago.

While Borders recognized the technology, it was reluctant to alter its business model to adapt to the changes in the book-selling market. For online book sales, Borders formed a partnership with Amazon in 2001, which pretty much gave Amazon unprecedented access to its customer data and purchasing habits. In return, Borders was able to put off developing its own online bookstore, while Amazon "ate its lunch." For ebooks, Borders formed a partnership with Sony in 2006, which allowed it to not develop its own ebook reader and ebook store. The Sony hardware was good, but the software and its implementation was nightmarish. In the meantime, Amazon introduced the Kindle, which rapidly dominated the ebook reader market.

Borders in Kona is terrible. I always thought the stores were awful, selling low-quality 'stocking stuffer' crap. I tried to used the Wi-Fi there a few weeks ago, and when it didn't work, they gave me an 800-number to call. The number was for their website internet support person, who had no idea why their Wi-Fi in Kona wasn't turned on!

Hope you're able to take advantage of their closing. Gotta tell you, I found the Kailua-Kona store to be one of the most over-priced book stores I ever
went into. Lived there for 2 years and never walked out with a purchase.

Borders also hired a lot of execs from other industries...not sure that worked out very well.

You just reminded me why I stopped shopping at Borders years ago. They had this intricate system of in-store sales and coupons and member benefits etc. that meant you could get decent discounts IF you'd check the weekly specials, print out the coupons, buy the category that was on sale that week, etc. Otherwise you'd pretty much be paying list or list +. It was just too, too much work.

Then along came Amazon, and... end of games!
