I don't suppose they'd let us bring two border collies?
I recommend it to friends who want to come up from Hilo to the wonderful concerts in the park, maybe have a glass of wine at intermission, but don't relish the late night drive back down the hill. Not all of us can afford a night in one of the local B&Bs (of which there are many, at all price points), and not all are amenable to the rustic charms of a rural hostel, but for some gentle folk like myself it is quite a find.

Satoshi is the innkeeper, a dear sweet man who built the place and has lived there next to the historic Old Japanese Schoolhouse maybe 20 years. He also has a beautiful wife and two adorable daughters who provide grace and giggles.

Leave your shoes outside, and please don't let in the cat!

Ah, doesn't sound like a place for two crazy border collies, so we would probably have to drive home to feed the critters. I'll send relatives and tourists there, though. It's easier for them to stay overnight than to drive back when they visit the volcano.

Maybe the OP can work a deal with a B & B for a discounted fairly long term stay? Then they'd have time to go find a rental without having to stay at a hotel or go camping. Staying at a B & B also injects money directly into our economy. All but one of the hotels are mainland or foreign owned, aren't they? Plus a B & B is much more charming and home like than a hotel, IMHO.

Just wanted to give everyone a update. Wife and visited Hilo and Kona ended up buying a place on the Kona side. All is good, prices are not bad compared to what we are used basically bought everything we usually do and spent 21$ extra. Not too bad at all.

Gas is 74 cents higher than where we are from. But so far so good.

Online business hit a boom and looks like I will be hiring an extra person to run it while I am out in the town.

Probably will be getting my parents to move in with me as soon as possible. They love Hawaii just not fortunate to live here.

Savings last only so long, and it's expensive here. Most jobs here are part time due to the requirement of carrying insurance on anyone who works 20 hours or more. You will find a lot of people with 19 hour a week jobs.

Unskilled or semi-skilled jobs are more prone to being under the PT status. But those in a skilled profession, or one that requires very much on-the-job-training, have a much better chance of having full-time work. The types of jobs where there are a high turn-over tend to not want to invest into employees, and avoiding benefits is one way of doing so.
