I recognize those Rocky Mt. roads, Snikt. Driven that part of I-70 many times, don't like it.

How about the "Million Dollar Highway" btwn. Ouray and Silverton? Never been so scared on a highway IN MY LIFE. Drop-offs, no guard-rails. Highways on the B.I. are smooth-sailing, comparitively!

Haven't made it down to US-550 yet, but I will very soon. I like those kinda roads, but not a road like that in snow/ice conditions.

The snowy picture one is Independence Pass, pretty fun, especially in the fall

Make the Saddle Road excursion even more useful by adding in your Mauna Kea outing.

One warning I'll add about Saddle Road, for those prone to car sickness, is to plan on making frequent stops to help prevent that from setting in on the Hilo side. Take your camera along, and you won't mind the stops at all. There are many places to pull over and take photos of interesting rocks, plants, etc.
