A friend came to visit me once on the Big Island. I worked up at Mauna Kea at the time, so I took her up there one evening; it happened to be one of the rare days we were socked in. A few days later we ended up camping at the namakanipaio campground in Volcanoes NP and she got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. She told me in the morning as she walked across the grassy field she happened to look up and see the Milky Way above her, in all it's glory and just started bawling! She had never seen anything like it before and was so overwhelmed! I'm thinking this happens to a lot of people! I remember on my Mauna Kea nights, many people asked "Why is this foggy cloud covering up the stars!?" and I'd have to answer, "That foggy cloud is actually your Galaxy..."

It doesn't matter how many times I see it, it still happens to me! Well, maybe not bawling, but I do get choked up and misty eyed each and every time I look up and apprehend the majesty of the Hawaiian skybowl at night. From the vantage point of the Kilauea overlook, in the thinner air and away from city lights, it is staggeringly beautiful.

Some people ask why I put up with all the rain and the winter chill in Volcano, and this is one very big reason why. Because of the stunning natural beauty I encounter on a daily basis.

Not this year. Nothin' to see. It's foggy, cold, overcast, intermittent showers... a good night to stay home and throw another log on the fire.

So, to avoid such pests, I guess we can ask the soil purveyors for a signed and notorized affadavit of purity before we purchase, right ?
