But I wonder what would really happen if a county engineer or state official suggested diverting a lava flow--or would that never happen due to cultural sensitivities?

I ask because unlike the Kapoho and Kalapana flows, this one might possibly be diverted. It is long and narrow, and it flows in the cracks for a good distance. If those cracks or channels could be blocked, the lava could be forced out of the channel at a higher elevation, and then might flow north of Pahoa. That might save the town or at least buy some time (then again, people are probably tired of waiting in limbo). Or maybe no engineer would sign off on that because the lava just might go through a different neighborhood.

But I haven't seen any discussion of possible diversions, so I'm wondering if it is a disrespectful topic. I hope I'm not being disrespectful for asking, just honestly wondering.
Nope not at all a disrespectfull topic but a good question.
