Aloha!

I have been using Google Maps and Google Earth to try and pinpoint places I would like to possibly spend time in when I get to the island. When I move there July 1st I will initially be staying in Fern Forest which is several miles from the beach. I will not own a motor vehicle and would like to not have to own a bicycle as well.

Does anyone know if the sweet spot I am looking for exists? Where you can travel between the two relatively easy by foot?

Eventually I would like to possibly buy some land (would need to be in the rain forest) and would like to have easy enough access to the beach.

I can't help you on location but reading your post brings to mind all kinds of questions, but I'll limit it to this one;

How are you going to get food and various sundries with your plan of living in a relatively remote area when your mode of transportation is walking? Just curious.

Part of the problem! My desirable habitat would be in the forest however I also want to do research using seawater..agriculture, desalinization, etc. My sweet spot may not exist but thought I would give it a shot.

Look around Waa Waa or Opihikao, both places are jungley and near the ocean and not far from the busline. Fare is $1.

Unfortunately, proximity to the ocean on the Hilo side does not necessarily imply easy access to a "beach." Much of the Lehia Park Residential Lots subdivision near Keaukaha lies within the rainforest and is within walking distance of a couple of beaches.

That all depends upon how one defines 'beaches'. Bigger Island beaches are few and far between, by Maui standards.

I probably should have said shore instead of beach. Mainly just near the ocean is what I meant.
