Sounds like for those who move there, need to educate themselves on where to swim and how to take the most effective route on washing/growing veggies/produce. So do not swim in streams downhill from pastures, wash your veggies, preferably grow them, but it still doesn't cover you 100 percent. Also ocean infections? Is this when you cut your self on coral or have a cut and get some kind of bacterial infection? Wash with an antibiotic soap, instead of regular soap? Fungal afflictions, like what?

Its like any other place right, like the SARS scare and bird flu on the mainland, right? Just different things to watch out for?

Eh, no worries, it's not been a topic lately and sometimes new stuff pops up when you chew on a topic twice.

Not exactly sure what the fungal infections are, some sort of athlete's foot or jock itch, I'd guess. Using antibiotic bath soap seems to help which is odd since it's a fungus and not a "biotic" but it seems to keep them away. Once they show up, though, you'll need some sort of anti-fungal cream or powder. Gold Bond medicated doesn't do much, it's just menthol in talc. There used to be salicylic acid and/or sulfur soaps which worked well, not sure if they are still sold or not.

Hot weather means fungus can happen anytime even if you don't dip into a stream. Using the same bath towel once too many times can cause it. No big deal. Cream it up!
I think when people hear about a fungal infection from a place like Hawaii or otherwise they lump it in with flesh eating something or other.

Probably the most common type is "haole rot"- Tinea, which is a naturally occuring yeast that lives on everybody but gets overactive in high humidity. Not necessarily caused by dirty towels, is easily cured by using Selsun Blue.

Probably "jungle rot" under another name? Selsun Blue sounds useful, more easy to find than salicylic soap, too.

Other than having "rot" in their common names, "jungle rot" (tropical ulcer) and "haole rot" (tinea versicolor) are not related.

I had an uncle with jungle rot he caught in the South Pacific while in the Navy, had it all his life, it was awful, open running sores on both ankles and feet. I've had haole rot before, that just looks bad.
