Have you found a few good places for running? No mountain lions anywhere around so that's good. No poison oak, although the mango could be a problem. You probably don't want to run on red road in Puna, isn't that lined with mango trees? Lots of folks run on the Kona side, especially during the Ironman.

Yeah, I know all about mangoes. I used to eat mangos all the time in florida, eat them right off the skin. sooo good! then i got urticaria which makes your mouth burn and itch and form blisters. it was really bad. I don't even touch mangoes now. But if someone peels one for me and rinses it off. I'll eat it!

Blind Cleric: yeah, I know bear attacks in the US are not very common. But I'm sorry, I would never want to face down a bear.

What's this???
I eat mangos all the time. It's my favorite fruit. I wash them and dice them up eating everything except the seed! I can get sick from this?

Hi Mcfrosty,

The mango skin (not the mango itself) has a substance called urushiol which can cause an allergic reaction. It is the same substance found in poison oak, poison ivy, poison sumac. If you are allergic to the aforementioned plants, then you are probably sensitive to mango skin as well. If you haven't had any problems....keep on keeping on. Urushiol may not bother you at all. However, some time sensitivities change over a life time.

I've known a lot of folks allergic to mango skin that still enjoy mangos as well as some who can't eat them, so the severity seems to be different depending on who is involved. Doesn't seem fair that such a tasty thing should have hidden dangers. Guess we can all default to chocolate, then, if we get mango rash?
