Not gonna happen.

The very people that would benefit from this "service" will be those that will be against them.

They are noisy. Very noisy. And no, there is no new promising technology to make them quieter. There is a reason why helicopters are insanely loud and forever will be (a drone is, by definition, a quad-copter). The FAA will always force them to fly low (below 400 ft) therefore they will be heard very loud and clear from the ground.

For every person living in a rural area that would trade off peace, quiet and privacy for the convenience of only very small and lightweight package delivery service to their home, there will be 10 people that will be against it. I just can't see people living in quiet rural areas tolerating these annoying buzzing machines flying over their homes at all times of the day. But maybe I'm just weird.

If people want the conveniences of living in an urban or suburban environment, they should move there.

Really? Not even the quiet stealth helicopters that took out Bin Laden? 5 years ago?

Can only imagine what they have now.

As I said, there is no new promising technology to make them quieter. The "stealth" helicopters that assisted in the Bin Laden compound raid were designed to be made invisible to radar. Yes, they used very expensive advanced blade technology (that has been around for many years) to reduce blade-vortex interaction noise... but you make as if they tiptoed their way into the compound. The helicopter was still very, very loud; anyone would know of their approach (from sound alone) from a significant distance.

Of course, nobody knows what will happen 30+ years out as even the brightest and most talented scientists and engineers can't even dream up what may be reality that far out.

But in the case of drone delivery in rural areas, I just don't see it happening anytime in the distant future (<20 years?); definitely not inside of 5 or 10 for that matter. Privacy will always be a major concern regardless of what technology comes out to quiet the machines. These drones operate and record high resolution video and are required by the FAA to be operated by humans (i.e. "pilots" will see right into every home and backyard they fly over).

If privacy and noise issues combined don't prevent the service from becoming reality, I can see teenagers in rural areas shooting these down just for fun - and they will get away with it. Technology can't help you there.

Any way you look at it, it's a really dumb idea.

"Drone delivery" by ground is already happening in limited markets. Most of the drones in the delivery market won't be by air. That's just a gimmick.

The lack of mail service is not restricted to very rural areas. We have a home in Wakoloa Village that doesn't have mail service
