What kind of area is this? Is the weather different than other parts of the island? How long a drive from Hilo (seems far). Anything distinctive ? Thanks

Umm, what kind of area? Kona area, coffee farms, small towns/ships, city of refuge, 2-step, Ho'okena beach etc...
All areas of the island have different weather than all other areas (microclimates). I work in Captain Cook and it isn't unusual for it to be dumping rain at work and dry just a half mile in either direction.

Perhaps some more specifics regarding what you want to know about this area?

thanks I had seen a real estate ad by Tanya Sunshine on Zillow 222 acres for $240k but it was a mistake- wrong price. I do understand the VOG is bad there however. Still for $240k I might have survived.

It's a long drive, for sure. Going the south route, the stretch from HOVE to Captain Cook becomes a windy road, so progress is slow. This is a good thing, IMO, because it's so scenic.
Captain Cook area is arguably the most tropical looking and beautiful spot on the Kona side. At least, it is in my opinion.
