Puna WILL grow on you. Walk softly, and carry a BIG weed-eater.

Thanks for your comments, it seems like a stretch to make it work based on our situation at the moment. We started in Twin Falls on Maui, had the rain catchment system and lived amongst nature and away from things so I have some understanding of the rural lifestyle. We then moved close to Kahakuloa in the country past Wailuku. We actually bought our house here because it reminded us of our situation in HI and now have 2 acres in MI. We would fair better on the Puna side than we would in a city environment but it would still be a shock for a few years as it is a "different way". We would need a "mentor" for the self-suffecient lifestyle. I am not sure how this fits with everyone post earlier, but when we left we didn't keep a lot of contact and in talking to a friend who remained he said it sucks because time was invested in us and then we leave. I never thought about, maybe immature or felt we wouldn't be missed or that we were going home to family. Not sure how things will work out but Hawaii is wonderful and I am happy for all of you who have made it your home.

Precisely why folks don't warm up to newcomers until they've been around for a couple years. Even then, they will still sometimes leave.
