Leilani Guy

I dont want to beat this subject up, meaning im sure you have heard alot of questions regarding this. Leilani sits on the east rift zone of Kilauea. (correct me if im wrong), but out of curiosity, are people living in leilani concerned about the active vents near (or in) the area. It is my understanding that there are lava tubes running up and down this entire rift zone all the way out to puna ridge. If property loss is due to lava, how are people affording to rebuild? What happened to Kapoho and Kalapana were catastrophic, how do people move on financially? Sorry for all the questions, but i couldnt help being curious. By the way, those are great videos on the punaguide website. Thanks

Ken

Aloha Ken, everyone who buys land or houses in Leilani is given full disclosure before close of escrow about the lava hazard and insurance cap. Several houses were moved out of Kalapana ahead of the flow. My neighbors across the street had their house hauled here from Kalapana when it was overrun in 1990, about 9 miles down the road (in lava zone 2). They could have moved it farther on to a safer area, but wanted to be as close to their old homesite as possible. They still own their lava covered land. A few people have built new homes in Kalapana on the cooled lava. There is something about this place that has attracted us all, we're fatalistic, maybe we're all just crazy.
