my wife and i are heading out to hawaii in two weeks and are looking at cars to rent. something we could sleep in would be super great like a bus or vangagon.
we found gb that rents a westfalia for 15 - 100 a day with no breaks for the week and its just way too much..i fugured i'd give this forum a try, maybe someone knows of a more reasonable deal???? if not well rent a little car and pack a tent. well be spending most of our time around puna..soo excited!

have you checked out where you will be sleeping in the van or tent? there are not very many campgrounds on the BI. Although I'm sure there are some, I'm not familiar with any. some places allow camping on the beach, but there have been problems, especially at Hookena. Have you read "Hawaii, the Big Island Revealed"?

Don't have any thoughts about where to rent a vanagon, either. Have you tried Harpers?

Better take that deal. I haven't seen too many VW buses or Vanagons in Puna that are in working condition; however, there are probably some rusted out ones hidden in the forest that are used by some of the local "hippies" and "Rastas" as makeshift residences.

Default private camp AOK

If you have a private place to camp, go for it, it's a good bet. Stay away from the beach parks & camps, homeless, desperate types show up/ live there.

Big Island camping is great. We just got back from a camper van adventure there and had the time of our lives. I don't know what people are talking about, we were safe as could be in our deluxe camper van and it had everything we needed inside.

Where did you find a camper van? What campground did you stay in?
