Lane Park introduces its new retailers this week. We checked out the Western this past weekend and it is a very nice market. Feels just like one of the upscale/boutique style grocer's that are all the rage these days. Nice design with mezzanine level, café that serves breakfast and linner, extensive wine section with tasting/sample machine and growler service.

$56,000 in incentives per job created. Crazy what you have to do to get companies to build here (or anywhere)

It looks like the ball is rolling for real around the city with these special called meetings to determine if these proposals would meet the criteria needed for approval. Also it shows the redevelopment of intown areas are truly happening and reminiscent of the redevelopment of other central cities in recent years. I'm glad to see this occurring here.

The DRC kicked the Crossplex plan back. Seems they want something more walkable, more urban as opposed to what looked like a typical suburban strip center.

That's a good thing.

One of the last projects I worked upon leaving here was the redevelopment plan and implementation strategy for the Five Points West neighborhood. The commercial area needs to evolved from the 1950s-style suburban form to a more inner urban neighborhood commercial district similar to that of Woodlawn and Five Points South. I recall the discussions with Birmingham Planning, Engineering, and Permits Department (PEP) were to use the style of Edgewood retail center in East Atlanta as the template for the future of Five Points West commercial district. Its success with this more sustainable, urban form of redevelopment would set the tone of how other neighborhood commercial districts in the City would evolve successfully. We need more of a push for urban form and less towards suburban style development for the sake of any development (ala the mixed results of the Eastwood Village shopping center).
