Someone please educate me, but I don’t understand why Bartow Arena was even built in the first place let alone is being renovated now when you have a state of the art, NBA quality Legacy Arena right down the street at the BJCC. If the football team can play at the BJCC, why can’t the basketball team?

An appropriately sized on campus venue that's walking distance to dorms/academic buildings that the university controls is always preferred over an off campus, city owned venue with competing constituencies.

UAB's original preference was to build an on campus football stadium but the Board of Trustees vetoed that in a controversial decision in 2011 (likely because the shutdown was already in the works behind the scenes). Things have changed since then with the success of the program, but partnering with the city was still all the BOT would allow. In a perfect world for UAB fans, UAB would have a 30-35k seat stadium a couple blocks from Bartow with an adjacent green space for tailgating.

Because there are men's and women's basketball teams, graduations, concerts, and a host of other events that take place there. It's not as if it's built for 15 home games a year. And given how the BJCC now has G league, as well as other events, it would be pretty hard to schedule.

That's exciting.

Seems like ever since Mayor Woodfin was elected the international folks have been pushing for Birmingham to become what many thought it couldn't be. Seems like a lot is going on behind the scenes.

Los Angeles organizing summer olympic committee was here as well to see the Flag football and breaking-dancing competition for themselves. By 2028, they both could be events brought into the Summer Olympics permanently.

Still a few days left of course, but it's hard not to think the city crushed it. Not saying it was perfect by any stretch, but they did really well with everything. I think the only problem was them freaking out everyone to think the whole city would be shut down and blocked off - I think that paused a lot of traffic last weekend. Outside of that, I'm proud. Almost all of the events have been well attended.
