I've seen several, and it's certainly a god awful creation.

I do think that the Gran Touring (current codename) is something different entirely.

It's far lower to the ground than the 7 and 5 and certainly much lower than the 5 GT.

It's a car that's made to appeal more to style than practicality, I suppose, yet it remains a 4 door with ample seating for 4 grown adults.

As mentioned earlier, Mercedes kick started this market with their SLS. I don't think anyone expected it to sell quite as good as it did, as a result, most "prestige" manufacturers have been hustling to follow their lead. This would be BMW's entry into this market.

It's essentially a car for those who want the comfort/space of a 5 series/ E- class, but the looks of a sleek coupe, there are plenty of people who want that.

...Not entirely sure what that has to do with the new M5 though.

They haven't been selling much. My friend just bought a 550GT but the car was sitting in the showroom for about a year. He got a good deal for it and when I saw picks of it my reaction was what was my friend thinking of? When he drove it over I was simply amazed at the power and the luxury of it.

Power and luxury aren't really in question. It's the styling and the "answer to a question nobody was asking" configuration. Between the 5 GT and the X6 I think maybe BMW's designers were on extended vacation in Amsterdam. I'd call these two models "ugxurious."

The X6 is selling quite well actually, at least in Europe.

The X6 is quite useless but not that bad-looking.

Plenty of ugly cars sold in the U.S. (many of them are quite popular): Acura ZDX and MDX, Cadillac CTS Wagon and Coupe, Dodge Nitro, Chevrolet Aveo and HHR.

I guess "quite well" is relative. According to some quick checks, they sell about 5,000 a year here. Compare to about 35,000 a year for the X5...
