I stumbled upon murder mystery writer Tami Hoag. Her novels are set in Minneapolis though I'm not sure if ALL of them are as she's a new one to me. She's been around for a while, I just recently started reading her books.
You can't beat John Grisham for crime novels, taking place mostly in Memphis and the south.
There are also some early one-offs by Nora Roberts, if you want to wade through her list of books to find them. The best one I can think of at the moment is Carnal Innocence, set in Mississippi, I think. There are some others with the same type of title - Private Lies, Public Secrets, and so on.
I am looking for some crime/mystery books that are not set in the same boring locations like NYC, LA, DC, etc. Any ideas for books that are set in cities in the south? Atlanta, Miami, Memphis, any of the Texas cities? How about cities in the Midwest like STL, KC, Cleveland, Detroit, Twin cities, Chicago? What about Baltimore, or anywhere in upper New England? Maybe Denver, Phoenix, Albuquerque, Seattle? Any ideas would be appreciated, just tired of the same old things. I love NYC and LA and DC, just looking for something new. Thanks.
Two of my faves:
William Kent Krueger. Great mystery/thrillers set in rural Minnesota. Hero is a former county sheriff.
C.J. Box. Great mystery/thrillers set in Wyoming. Hero is a game warden.
Also:
Tess Gerritsen. Good mysteries set in Boston.
James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux series is set in Louisianna, and he also has another series set in Montana.
And of course there's always Tony Hillerman, mostly set in NM and Arizona.
I'm tickled with the original poster's question - I love Dana Stabenow, JA Jance, Tony Hillerman - add to that list Nevada Barr - previous Seasonal Park Ranger (NPS) - writes about various NPS Sites. I am now adding many more authors - thanks you everyone's posts.

I love Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon books. They are all set in national parks and the reader learns the history of each park. It's interesting stuff and the mysteries are good, too.
Peter Temple. Nine published novels, including "The Broken Shore", set in Australia. Delightful crime reads.
Not for the faint at heart, Peter Hoeg's "Smilla's Sense of Snow" is a deep and complex and highly literate crime novel set in Greenland. His "The Quiet Girl" will walk you through the nooks and crannies of Copenhagen.
