I love true crime also. I've read so many. I'm having trouble remembering the titles, as so many are similiar. One I read recently, and it was very good, was The Two Mrs. Kissels.
Among Helter Skelter of course. Look forward to reading a few of the recommendations listed here. Sometimes, just have to step away from true crime and crime board forums.
I read all of Ann Rule's books and Bugliosi's. I think his book And the Sea Will Tell is a masterpiece story of true crime. The movie was excellent, too.
I also like Joe McGinniss's book "Fatal Vision." It really set me on my ear. I was completely blown away by the horror of that book. I highly recommend it. WAIT! What does that say about me when I say I was blown away by horror and then recommend the book to others?
I loved Thous Shalt Not Kill by Mary S. Ryzuk, regarding John List who killed his family, disappeared for 18 years, and a neighbor recognized him finally through America's Most Wanted. Awesome book!
I've read and enjoyed all of Irene Pence's book.
And most of Harold Schechter's books are unforgettable.
In Broad Daylight by Harry N. Maclean, a murder in Skidmore, Missouri. A good case of vigilante action by a small town.
I love true crime books, also. I finished Mommy's Little Girl (about Caylee and Casey Anthony) by Diane Fanning. It was good, but there will be better ones after the trial. Right now I am reading Shake the Devil Off by Ethan Brown about a grisly murder in New Orleans. I'm about a hundred pages into it, and it's very interesting.
I love true crime as long as the book is well written. Unfortunately it seems they will publish almost anything these days, and a few that I've picked up were just awful.
I used to like Ann Rule, but after awhile found her books to be very repetitious.
I liked Vincent Bugliosi's books - Helter Skelter and And the Sea Will Tell (as an aside, I didn't fully buy his explanation as to why he was convinced his client in And the Sea Will Tell was innocent).
In Cold Blood is a classic, and I also liked Fatal Vision a lot.
Manhunt by James L. Swanson about the Lincoln assassination was great. True crime and history - a great combination.
Also loved Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets by David Simon. It was the basis for the tv show "Homicide" that aired in the 1990's and was the best thing ever on television IMO.
There are tons of others.
