The Book Thief
The Poisonwood Bible.

Good stuff, one and all.

Wow - chiming in on something with 4 months of input but it brought back a lot!

Pippi Longstocking
Wrinkle in Time
Trixie Belden which I preferred over Nancy Drew
Little Women
Misty of the Chincoteague (thanks to DezertGirl cause I'd completely forgotten the name but was trying to remember!)
Where the Wild Things Are (of course Max Sendak!! I still have a stuffed animal)
Hobbit - started there in the 5th grade and moved on...

Trixie Belden
Nancy Drew
Hardy Boys
Bobbsy Twins
And I read a lot of biographies for book reports. Not sure, but I don't think the teachers I had would have accepted a report on the Bobbsy Twins. We were actually given a list of books to choose from for book reports and I don't remember any of them being fiction until high school literature classes.

I adored the Beverly Cleary books, especially the Ramona ones! I still have them, cannot throw those out!

Default Books for Children

Another great book for children is The Hayburners by Gene Smith. It is a touching story with a great lesson. I loved it.

I didn't have a favorite book as a child. No one really encouraged me to read. Were there even popular childrens novels back in the 80s? It would seem this phenomenon started in the 90s.

Gosh, I grew up in a library. Me mum was an avid reader and she used to take me to the library every day except weekends.

Of course I started with Dr. Seuss. Who didn't.

I forgot all about Pippi Longstocking, thanks for bringing that one up.

Watership Down.

Can't think of any others. Must be a million out there I read back in the early 60's.
