No, I mean if you're not in school. I'm 23, and finished with school for the moment. And while I do like to have fun (with my friends), I'd like a bar where people aren't trying to get "****faced" or drinking straight from the tap.

You are really comparing moving somewhere new and establishing a grown-up life with basically hanging out texting girls? Seriously?

I haven't found that a lack of friendliness is an issue. I have already made a few friends. Perhaps its just coincidence that they all moved here from somewhere else too!

Driving in boston is really tough to get used to. Roads here are designed by someone on crack and the drivers here are the rudest in the country.

You get used to it when you learn to shut off that thing in your brain that says "things should never, ever be this way." After that, your apathy gland kicks on and you blend in. Smooth sailing from there.

Actually really, really good advice. Thanks for that.

I have lived in Mass for seven years and the only two issues I've had is owning a car here and alcohol sales. I am from SF bay area, so owning a car was always a given for me. When I moved here, I was determined to keep and use it. However, after moving to Porter Sq, and dealing with shoveling my car out in winters and moving it for street cleaners in the summer, I finally got rid of it. I use Zipcar for major shopping excursions. I am saving on my car insurance which went up by $200 after moving here.

The other adjustment I had to make was not being able to go into a grocery store to buy a bottle of wine. In Cali, they sold alcohol everywhere (even gas stations). Here, unless it's certain TJ or Whole Foods, you have to go to liquor stores. It's a pain when I have an arm full of groceries and I have to stop at another store. Also, the liquor store near my house isn't even open on Sundays.

As for the friends issue that I read up thread, it took a little time but I have a great circle of friends here. Of course, the majority of them have relocated from out of state. Since I grew up in Silicon Valley, I am use to a higher cost of living, so it didn’t faze me one bit.

A few years ago the some of the 7-Elevens sold beer (not wine) and my Star Market near the Cambridge-Belmont line sold beer and, I think, wine as well. Now they don't. A few years ago, also, NO liquor stores in Mass. were open on Sundays by law. Hence the giant OPEN SUNDAYS highway signage for New Hampshire's state-run (sounds socialist??) liquor stores. Now the law's been changed and virtually all are open Sundays.

Boston seems very youth-oriented (perhaps unsurprisingly) and I don't find many social venues for middle-aged folks (Pittsburgh, for instance, had a lot of jazz clubs where really interesting and accomplished older people went to hang out).

On the other hand, if you are a young person, I don't think that will be as much of a problem--there seem to be lots of places where young people congregate and mingle. That being said, I do think there is something to the stereotype of the somewhat standoffish Bostonian (though obviously there are lots of exceptions to that).

I do like Boston, however. It has wonderful cultural institutions. Get back to me after I've endured my first winter, though, and maybe my ranking of problems will be somewhat different.
I lived in Peter's Township south of Pittsburgh.

We may have to relocate to Canton (we would probably choose a different SUBURB) and I am really freaked!

I'm 51, with no children and I am not looking forward to this move. =(

All these comments have me really scared.

I'm not a city nor a rural person?

Aren't there any malls or strip malls around? (I know people either love or hate them)

I like cold weather & snow, so that's a plus for me
Why is the grocery shopping difficult?

My husband would be working in Canton - we are NOT city people. We're old and set in our ways. =(
