I'm moving to Boston soon and I'm a 21 year old recent grad. I'm looking for somewhere in the 500-750 range for rent. I want to be within commuting distance of Brighton (as that's where my new work is), but I'd also like to be somewhere that's got lots of stuff to do and explore. I really don't know Boston at all and would like some tips on avoiding sketchy areas and also finding places that are nice, but affordable. Thanks for your help!

You'll almost certainly need to get a room mate, because you wont really be able to afford any place in the city without one. Allston is probably your best bet, its right next to brighton, relatively affordable, and is pretty heavily infested with students and singles in their 20's. You will find many others in your situation there who will be looking to rent with other young professionals, so id look there first. It's a nice neighborhood, not pristine, but there are plenty of bars and many middle aged people dont choose to live there because they know the majority of the population is half their age. i've lived in malden, somerville, jamaica plain, and roxbury when in your situation and did fine with room mates. Bostons crime isnt bad compared to many cities, so i was only really concerned with finding room mates and an affordable place.

boston rooms & shares classifieds - craigslist

Use the roomshare list on Craigslist, its the only way you'll be able to afford Brighton area in that range, unless you have roommates already that you can rent out a multiple bedroom unit.
