Hey I'm hoping you all can help with some of my concerns?
My girlfriend is from BOS and wants to move back to move forward. We are doing the long distance thing now. For my career I'd need to work in a suburb probably west to south of Boston.

Relocating there I'm shocked by the expense, is it something you just deal with, i'm afraid i'm going to feel like i'm living in an apartment my whole life!

The traffic is a concern too, I mean in STL i could get cardinal tickets at a moments notice and run downtown, I'd probably go to 30+ games, it seems like that is just not feasible in Bos for most things, expense or hassle wise.

If anyone that has reloacted are the cost of living things pretty accurate? I find it crazy i need to basically double my salary to live the same way, but in an older and smaller house?

And what about politics? the national narrative is that MA/BOS is far out there left wing, is that just the majority and or is it like rampant where if i'm a conservative i am better off not discussing it?

Oh can can anyone give me a straight answer on investment taxes? i looks like the state has an add'l tax thats different from every other state?

Thanks alot!

Traffic sucks in Boston and it's expensive. No getting around that.

Boston started several wars to give you the right to free speech, so that's the prevailing consensus. You can stand at Park St Station and preach your politics at the top of your lungs if you like. Bottom line it's just like anywhere else, everyone's entitled to their own opinions. Don't forcefeed it down peoples' throats, you will probably have no problems.

All in all, a move from a midwestern or southern city is going to be a transition from space and convenience to density. Boston is a very fun place to live if you like people watching, energy, and particularly if you like walk. Sidewalk cafes, strolls through the parks, dense with history and tradition, and a lot of smart people. You need to visit to see if it is for you. Is the fun and vibrancy of an old historic city worth the expense? Only you can decide. I prefer it, I'm temporarily doing the Old South myself here in Dallas. I look forward to losing my car getting back to city life. This is boring to me. I mean it's ok. But, well you'll see ...
