Hi Everyone,
My boyfriend and I will be moving to the east coast in a few months. I will be going to school at Boston University and he will be going to school in Manchester,NH. Does anyone have any suggestions on where we could live between the two cities that would still allow each of us to have reasonable commutes? I can drive or use public transportation (into Boston), while he will likely just drive (into Manchester). Also, we'll be looking to rent a small house or townhouse, so we'd need a place that doesn't have outrageous rents.

Any help would be AWESOME!

Thanks!

Andover may be an option, it is close to I-93, has commuter rail into Boston and probably about 45 minute drive to Manchester. Derry, NH is also nice and near I-93, closer to Manchester, but your only option would be driving into Boston, 45 minutes on a very good day (could be much longer). Both towns are very family-oriented, though, not sure if that is what you are looking for as students.

Hi emman8

The closer you get to Boston, the higher rent you'll be paying... You might want to consider getting close to the NH border (or maybe live IN NH) and depending on your schedule, take public transportation into the city. I don't know the T system well, but do check MBTA.com > Commuter Rail Maps and Schedules

Since your BF is planning on school in NH, you'd be ending train service at North Station, than hopping on the MBTA.com > Commuter Rail Maps and Schedules

Something to consider is an area that will put him to commute to NH via Route 101 (east/west corridor in southern NH) and you heading to Boston maybe via Route 95 instead of 93? (I'm unsure of the best route to BU)

If you're both planning to commute, Andover was a good suggestion, nice town though affordable housing may be an issue. The Route 93 commute from Derry to Boston is a daily nightmare, yesterday traffic was backed up for hours due to a "car-B-Q" somewhere in Massachusetts..
