I am an Indian graduate student from northeastern university. This will be my first time in Boston. I plan on renting a 3 bedroom apartment on the turquoise way near mission main apartments. However, one of my friends suggested that the area is not safe. Is this true and should I be looking somewhere else.

No I do not, actually there will be 6 of us staying. All bachelors(just graduated). Is it still unsafe?

Disclaimer: This is going back on experience from ~1999-2004ish, so take it with a grain of salt.

I went to college in that area during that time, and had friends living in apartments in Mission Hill from Ward St down to Parker Hill area south of Huntington Ave. During the daytime/early evening, it was fine. Used to walk to Brigham Circle for chinese all the time, and frequented a bar called Flannigans that is no longer there. Out at 7-8PM, no problem. However, late at night (midnight or later) it was a little rough. I've had friends jumped/robbed, and a couple were stabbed trying to resist the robbery. I've had a gun flashed at me. Saw many drug deals in broad daylight almost daily near Ward st. Car break-ins were to be expected if you kept a car with you. Having a POS didn't help either as one friend who had an apartment there had the crappiest car in the world stolen 3 times from the Ward st area (before Mission Main was there). We always joke about how it was so crappy the thieves would give it back.

I graduated around 2004, and haven't been back in the area much. Mission Main was built around the time i was there(2002-2003ish maybe), and prior to that, the area was a run down, brick-building project along Ward st. They leveled that, and then built what I guess became Mission Main. I'm going to speculate that their $3K in rent may have started a turn-around. I see that businesses have invested in the immediate area I used to frequent, so it's possible it's not like it used to be when I was there....hence my disclaimer.

EDIT: In searching, I've read a few articles that do suggest the area has been gentrifying since I left it.

Thanks for the reply. Any areas that I should stay away from?

Maybe you should focus on where you want to live, as opposed to places you want to avoid. There aren't too many places I'd actively try to avoid as a single dude, but plenty of places I wouldn't want to live.

That's just me.

Me too. They used to run a special where they offered 10 cent wings with a pitcher of beer up til 7PM. We would go after class, get beer, and order up 200-400 wings and just chow down. We'd be there 2-3 nights a week for pretty much all 4 years straight

I think they closed down around 2005/2006?

Thanks for the reply, However my question still remains, would you recommend the area to a group of students, based on the current developments there?
