That's near or most likely in the small projects/subsidized housing cluster. I think off San Juan Street, between Tremont and Shawmut.

But...still very too close for comfort to many non-subsidized apartments and condos.

I briefly walked thru there last fall in the early evening to pass from one part of the South End to another, without issue. But I know better, and should always take a different route via the nicer parallel side streets. It's obviously, upon first glance, not the pristine, high income parts of the South End.

I can't imagine any forum members ever needing to be there even if in the area for the nice restaurants or nice apartments. Not that far from some Northeastern University dorms and a couple of nice, newer apartments and a nice, new science complex on that expanded part of Northeastern University on their Tremont Street side near Massachusetts Avenue (I believe a/k/a the Roxbury neighborhood at that point, even I think a Roxbury zip code, correct?).

I guess it'll never matter to these "crime creators" that Boston police headquarters is a mile or less away...plus the South End police station nearby on Harrison Avenue. When in doubt, just shoot or stab others right?

Hmmm.... wasn't sure if projects are right there or a block or two away. I recall a few undesirable "such and such Court" addresses off side streets from that pocket of otherwise decent streets from my taxi/rideshare days. Heck, there's projects across from the high-end Foodies Urban Market on West Broadway, though nicely renovated about 10 years ago.

Hmmm...I think my nephew lives on that D Street block or a block away. Both he and his fiance have good jobs, college grads, as does his fiancee's brother and new bride next door. I think most residents even in that basic-looking pocket are young professionals in the past 10-20 years. He's definitely not living in the projects, but still, too close for comfort. I don't want to know their exact address, as I don't want them to think I'm snooping and checking up on them if I'm ever in the area, lol. But it's close to Boston Medical Center for his fiancee's med school. If I were young with a good income, and proximity to work isn't too much of an issue, I'd rather live in the North End, Brookline, Back Bay, Beacon Hill or the Kenmore/Fenway, for safety reasons, than some of the South End or South Boston if prices were somewhat similar, and if not, get an older, more basic unit in those areas (yes, I realize most of South Boston has been relatively safe for a decade or more.)

I don't want to jink anything, and eventually this summer we'll hear about incidents, but it's been relatively quiet in Boston Common for awhie. I recall several incidents there last year, I think done by very young teens. Sometimes Suffolk or Emerson college students from the adjacent dorms were victims?

This seems contrary to what some or many seem to say: "Oh, my! Stay the heck out of the Common! Maybe it was worse there many years ago?

And I mentioned last year here how I feel remarkably safe, even at 10 pm, walking in the Common. Usually plenty of normal folks passing through and dog walkers.

Isn't it the cement tower, the old "Nurses' Building" across from CVS near Rosie's Place women's shelter? It may have become subsidized years ago, but maybe not originally? If not subsidized, it sure looks so. Further down on Northampton near Columbus may even have a different zip code...and real estate ads for lofts there often call it South End, but it's Roxbury to me and maybe many others.

Now that West Springfield address is indeed South End, I think; I think all of it from Washington St. to I think Columbus Ave. is officially South End, but maybe zip codes may or not change to dictate different neighborhoods.

Some addresses in what is considered South End by many or all have a Roxbury zip code -- I think -- 02119 instead of 02118?; I recall reading decades ago that people complained around who had a Roxbury zip code who thought it should be a South End zip code!

It truly matters, of course, for property values and perception; few co-workers will come to a holiday party at your apartment if you say you live in Roxbury, not South End.

Most of W. Springfield Street is nice nowadays, if I recall. But of course some subsidized nearby. And yes, bars on some doors and windows of some W. Springfield residences.... same in some of Back Bay and Beacon Hill.

Eustis Street is truly Roxbury, if I recall, near Albany Street, Hammond St.(some projects there), toward Roxbury"s Dudley St. with some or several subsidized all units on Eustis St.

I drove a cab and rideshare for years, so still recall some streets -- but certainly not an expert on all of Boston's streets.

Others here may need to clarify my assessment of the above streets.

It changes to Lower Roxbury at some point after crossing Mass Ave, but it's still South End with an 02118 zip code in that area.
