I know that South Boston is Boston’s historically working class Irish neighborhood but I was wondering if there are any remnants left of this culture. You know, like pubs, restaurants, other Irish owned businesses, social clubs, maybe a church?

Yeah there's still quite a few bars in south Boston that have an Irish vibe - L st tavern, Shenanigans, Murphys law.

St brigid in south boston is a Caltholic church that is still alive and well

On this forum people will you tell you south boston is filled with with just young working professionals and this is true but there plenty of old school people and their kids, grandkids still living there. Also many of the new working professionals that moved in happen to be of Irish descent as well.

There is still a significant presence, but nothing like it once was. I think the biggest indicator is the political representation. It's still pretty dominated by Southie people, most of whom have Irish lineage. I'm not sure presence of Irish bars or St Brigid's means anything though. Irish bars thrive in every yuppified place I've lived in or visited.

Yes, and the fact that it's still around says a lot. Although it is on the west side.

I spent some time going out in Southie in the 2000's and I've never heard of or seen that place. I think I might be better off for it, lol.

Thanks guys.

Are there any Irish owned butcher shops, grocery stores, and/ or restaurants left?

The Irish presence can’t all be pubs and St. Bridget’s Catholic Church.

What is meant by "Irish"? Irish-Americans with deep roots in Boston, or Irish born immigrants?

TBH there are more Irish born in Brighton more out off Market Street and around Oak Square. You'll find them over at Kiki's (grocery), Corrib Pub, Irish Village, Porter Belly's.

I really don't think the presence of a church means anything. There aren't many vibrant parishes in Boston, period. Those that are lively are not particularly ethnic.
