The Mass ave bridge is getting it's long awaited protected bike lanes to connect both protected strips of Cambridge and Boston.

That link is referring to improvements within Cambridge, further up Mass Ave. However, y es there are now cones on the Harvard Bridge establishing temporary bike lanes between across the river. This is only a pilot at this point and is being managed by MA DOT, not the City of Cambridge. At this point they have reduced the bridge from 2 to 1 lanes in both directions. Not sure if this is feasible going forward as the bride was already a choke point headed south on Mass Ave from Cambridge into Boston.

Its already one lane going in and one lane going out. so for .15 miles its 2 lanes.

Yes, so now the traffic will be bumper to bumper back to Prospect Street instead of Vassar.

I wonder if this is a (very) delayed reaction to a well publicized fatality there, a few years back:

https://www.wbur.org/news/2015/09/01...es-bike-safety

It was sad, and what's worse is that a study after the fact pinned the blame on the bicyclist who was a renowned surgeon, rather than on the turning vehicle.

Majority of this type of accidents involve riding in the blind spot of a large truck and trying to blow past it on the right without even bothering to look at the turn signals. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I think responsibility and awareness go both ways. That's what bike coalitions, including Mass Bike, have been advocating for years. This type of forced separation is the safest way to go. The best example is Amsterdam.

Boston is a tricky city to navigate in cars and bikes . I was never one of those cyclists who scream the laws at people and zoom through traffic telling people I have the righter way. Ultimately I know any vehicle on the will annihilate me, so I tend to go by those laws. I also have never really been one of those drivers that stares at my phone and jams through clogged intersections to be blocking everyone else in every way just so i could "get in there" seconds after a red light. theres a happy medium here and for the most part. Most people get the drift.
