Could be folks commuting back into the city after work. We often think of people only commuting into Boston, but there are plenty of people who commute from Boston/Cambridge/Charlestown/Medford/etc to 128- and there are typically even less public transit options for them. There are more cars leaving my Seaport parking garage at 8 a.m. than arriving with people commuting to work from their Seaport apartments. It's hard for me to imagine paying Boston prices if I needed to commute to Burlington or Woburn, but plenty of people do. Not to mention the poor souls who work north of the city but live on the South shore (or vice versa).

This is what my wife does. Lives in Boston but commutes to the north shore. Easy morning commute but the afternoon return is much worse. If her work were close to a commuter rail station she'd do that in a heartbeat, but as you pointed out transit options are slim.
