I would recommend.
Great idea. They can stroll down lovely Boston St to charming Southampton St enjoying the fumes, traffic, and piles of garbage strewn by the side of the road.

South Bay is THE ugliest filthiest neighborhood in all of Boston, perhaps eastern Mass. The only type who should be here is bare bone budget travelers who have absolutely no interest in experiencing what is good about Boston, because as far as Boston goes, although this is not the most dangerous section of Boston, it is the filthiest. 20 years maybe that will change, but presently it is a classic northeastern eyesore.

No it isn't.
The only problem with the area is that it is mixed industrial/residential. It is not a very attractive area but it is far from your description.
It is a crossroads area as many important roads go to and emanate from here. It is a great staging area for people doing exactly what this family was doing. And it is safe and clean.
As far as "classic northeastern eyesore" goes. That is a ridiculous description.

Safe? Not in the Lexington sorta safe, no. Clean? It's utterly filthy. What I should have added was stinking.

Tom, I lived in Lower Roxbury for the past seven years. I regularly shopped at South Bay, took Mass Ave or Norfolk Ave to Southie several thousand times. I smelled the reek of the unwashed homeless who live in Planet Storage. Lenox Junk, recycle plants, junkyards, methadone clinic at BMC, rotting buildings populate South Bay. There's garbage everywhere, homeless shanties, and the 24 hour store gas stations lock their front doors for a good reason. Sure, it's not like you take your life in hands driving through, but it's no place to take a date either.

South Bay is targeted for cleanup and progress is being made. That's why the Mayor wants to sell city hall and move it to South Bay because he wants to made a big dent in cleaning up that mess that sits between two great Boston neighborhoods. But the reality of it is that at this time, driving from the South End to South Boston entails driving through Boston's most unsightly neighborhood.
