My job will probably take me away from here soon, and I'll miss it.
I've lived here for 10 years and I find the people to be extremely narrow-minded (the "intellectuals" are and the "townies are both in their own little worlds.) I've found it to be a socially fractured place with the most unfriendly people I've met. And I've lived in Washington, D.C. (when it wasn't yuppie hell,) New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles and Sanfranciso.

This, too me, has been an emotionally punitive place...

Poor thing.

My wife, who is from Michigan, has done quite well here, so well that she is now Mrs. Joshua. She also has quite a few friends.

Self confident people make lasting friendships wherever they go.

The unemployment rate for metro Boston is 7.1% (June 2011). Not great, but well below the national average.

I know you were asking another poster, but as a scientist there aren't that many places better career wise.

So... what is your academic background and what is your vocation? And how old are you?

Please don't act like Boston isn't #1 in most unfriendly place.

I'm not from here and I've made plenty of friends too. My SO is from another country and I don't think he considers himself a friendless outcast either....if people feel that when a stranger walks down the street and doesn't smile or say hello is "mean" then indeed, Boston (or pretty much any larger city) is not the place for them.

I'm from Atlanta, and am visiting Boston this week with my teenage daughter. I went to school in Cambridge 82-86 and lived in the Back Bay. I still think that but for a few winter months, Boston is one of the loveliest cities I've ever lived in or visited. And, I have to say, that as far as big cities go, the people here are no less friendly than, and are oftentimes friendlier than, folks in other cities. After two days here, my daughter is in love with the city and I am still impressed by it.
