Me and my husband and our daughter (4) are moving to Boston at the begging of June. I am looking for a 2 br + apartment and i have considered Bedford, Lexington, Watertown, Waltham, but would prefer Arlington, since it is an easy commute, and it is closer to city. We can't afford more than $1500 a month right now. What other areas are good for family with a small kid, with good schools, and some kid activities. I would also love to be able to use public transportation or have an easy car commute( less than 45 minutes)

Thank you

Arlington is good.

You might also look in Belmont near Waverley Square. There are some reasonable rentals and a lot of younger families. Very quick commuter train into Boston and a quick drive to Lexington via back roads that don't take long to learn.

There are very good schools in Belmont, though probably more activities in Lexington. Belmont has a rep for being high-income but it really runs from super-wealthy to normal people paying $1250 for 2 bedrooms, with everything in between. Although the schools are very good, a lot of the wealthiest people in town go for private schools anyway.

Thank you Holden. I have also found some great rentals in Belmont. Do you know how to find an affordable place, without the brokers, or their huge fees, well huge for someone moving from Memphis. I also found lot of double listings of the same apartment, different rent prices... I do not trust Craigslist too much, and the no fee apartments offered are mainly in the areas i would prefer not to live in....
Thanks so much
Aleksandra

maybe bedford may offer a better rent and Arlington is nice also. Have you considered to rent a house in Bedford rather than an apartment?
Check out the local paper Boston Globe on Sunday and see what they do offer best of luck in your search!

Would you be driving to Lexington? If so, you might consider Newton. On average, it will be more expensive than some of the towns you're considering, but would be a nice town with good schools and several really neighborhoody kind of neighborhoods if you could find something in your price range.
