Hello all. I'm looking into moving to a Florida town on the ocean to both start over and also experience a whole new culture at the same time about mid February (end of current lease). I'm 31, single, no kids, and just quit my hard partying lifestyle and just looking to start over. After reading some threads, I've been scared off from Fort Myers and, well, anywhere in South Florida due to high crime. I have yet to hear anything bad about Melbourne though. That is, except South Melbourne. I'm looking to simply enjoy the sunshine and the ocean in a relaxed city. At the same time I'd need to find a decent job and can probably afford about $700/month apartment to start. Does Melbourne sound right for me? If not, can anyone offer any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Good luck, Bill. Melbourne was a good move for us, and hopefully it will be a great place for you to start your new life! After three years I am happy to call Melbourne "home". Pleae read my other thread for more information if you are interested!

It sounds like you would enjoy Jacksonville. Jacksonville has much more job opportunities than Melbourne and you will still be close to the ocean. And although I think Melbourne is nice, jobs are limited and I know that is a big consideration these days.

Melbourne is a city without any city amenities. No great restaurants, no great entertainment venues, it's just a congested city that will leave you wanting to drive to Orlando for any real city life.

bugs are just a part of Florida! I have lived all over Florida and the bugs in Melbourne are no worse or better than anywhere else. Just hire a pet control company and you won't have ANY problems! I even live on a wooded preservation, where there are lots of critters but we don't have bugs indoors. Good Luck!

What about the Avenues in Viera? I consider that good shopping and dining and it's practically in Melbourne.

Well..the Avenues has a movie theater, an old navy, and a few other things along with a Chilis, but is definitely NOT what i consider good shopping or dining!! Still...Orlando or Vero would be the closest spots to offer real city activities anywhere around here! Especially after I have lived in big cities like Tampa & Miami that have so much culture, nightlife, theater, dining, shopping, etc...everywhere i turned, Melbourne has very little to no culture or activities to offer a single person, unless you surf. If i were only 31 yrs old and single, I would NOT choose Melbourne as my new hometown. I would look for someplace a bit more exciting (actually...a LOT more exciting!) with better job opportunities. Sorry to sound negative, but Melbourne is truly a wonderful place to settle down with a family or to retire, but not really the best spot for a young, single adult. Good luck to you!

I lived in Orlando for fifteen years which has plenty of fine dining,shopping and entertainment.....but I still consider The Avenues a good place to dine and shop. There's a lot more there than a theater,Chilis and an Old Navy. Check out the website for Viera and click on shopping and you'll see what I mean.
