My family and I have decided on the Melbourne / Palm Bay area instead of Orlando. Eventhough it's much smaller than Orlando will it have enough of a city feel? Along those lines, is it also "modern feeling" or more old Florida and Southern?

Definitely city feeling, there is some old florida in the mix. IMO, Palm Bay would not be the place for me. Are you looking for something more specific?

Melbourne does not have a city feel, sorry. It feels more like old southern Florida. If you are looking for something modern and want a great neighborhood and environment for your family you may love Viera, it is just at the north part of Melbourne and I think it is still considered Melbourne, FL. It is mostly families that live in this area.
Hope that helps

Why do most feel Melbourne is better than Palm Bay?

Not to offend anyone I just think Palm Bay is nasty. As far as Viera, it's fairly new, very nice. Are you looking for anything specific as far as a city goes?

I will be teaching, so I think there's a good chance for me to get a job.

I am looking for some aspects of a city (I wanted Orlando as I love the concrete Jungle, but my wife won't have it) not really nightlife but shops, food, etc - not a small town. I've only been there once (going next month - we live in FL) and it felt small. Looking for attitude more than buildings, I guess.

Viera is fairly new, it is on the small side. You would be close to Melbourne and Meritt Island, not far from Cape Canaveral. You will find plenty of shops and food, also there is Cocoa Village that offers some nice specailty stores. My opinion is Melbourne and Meritt Island are a little congested for me.
Look up shops of Viera, theres some good info there.

Part of it may be that homes in Melbourne generally look better put together (no offense if anyone else lives there....that was just the impression I got when I was looking for a house in Brevard.....).

Melbourne also seems a little better off generally than Palm Bay. Having big car dealerships right off the 95 and billboards for builders emphasizing how (relatively) inexpensive the homes are cheapens the area, too.

If you are looking for a city feel, you ain't gonna find it in either place. Sorry.
