I've been waiting to post this one a while. I wanted to post a week or two ago... And it still might be premature even now...
That said, there is a better than 50/50 chance now I'll be coming home for good over the summer!!!!!!
Situations in life change - Sometimes when you least expect it.
My situation has changed to the extent that I know now I have the opportunity to decide wherever I want to live. I also know I am needed there.
There are still some details to be worked out down here in Dallas, but things are looking good at this point and I just couldn't keep it a "secret" any longer!
If there is a "Most Excited to Move Back To WNY" award, go ahead and slap my name on it
Many details to work out. Many things to tie off here. Much work to do for me over the next few months but make no mistake, I am extremely excited to share this with the board.
As I have more info, I'll be sure to share. Who knows, I may even have relo questions!

Best of luck on your anticipated move back to WNY!

I hope to give the job market up there another shot sometime next year.

Thanks all.
I guess I need to decide where to go in WNY. Would rent for a while for sure. Family is mostly in Amherst/Williamsville but may look for a place in Allentown. I had considered Windsong apartments but spending so much seems foolish for just me. I intend to change my lifestyle quite a bit when I return - dial things down a bit and go into major "saving mode", so I'd like to find something inexpensive... I'm thinking $650/mo for a 1br. in Allentown area might do the trick. Anyone have any advice?

You may know this already but just in case.

When looking at rents not all 650/mo apts are the same. Heat incl or not incl changes the math quite a bit

Thanks Marc. It would be nice to find a place that includes utilities, but my $650 thought was based on utilities being extra.
My budget would allow me to spend about $1000 a month total for rent and utilities but I'd like to stay as far below that as possible, but without living in a bad area.
Anybody have a rough estimate of utilities for a 700-800 sq ft apt for 1 person?

650 a month can get you a decent 2 or 3 bedroom apartment in several areas of the city: Riverside (Not too shabby), Blackrock (Meh), Lovejoy (Touch and go, dependent on area from what I saw), West Side (Up and coming, IMO), etc etc.

Utility costs will vary depending on several factors, but for my 1000 sq ft 3 bedroom, I pay about $100 in electric (I use a lot of electricity), and about $150 a month in gas (I am on a budget plan, so my bill rarely changes).

I would go Black Rock before I went Riverside, at least in terms of crimes reported in the paper. Plus you have a much healthier business strip in Amherst Street than Tonawanda Street.

On the other hand, I'm told you simply can't beat the sunset view from a second floor apartment on Niagara Street.

Leaving a state with few taxes for NY ? I'd rather transfer to Dalhart,TX than back to Buffalo Big D and that is saying something. If you want to deal with taxes but have 10 times the options year around as Buffalo, move to San Diego.
