Yes, there are several good universities in the area besides UB.
There is Canisius College. Expensive, but IMO a great school. I have several friends who went/go here. They love it, but claim they will be in debt forever.
There is also Buffalo State. I attended a swim camp here once. I personally loved the school.
There are also various community colleges. They are not bad, but I am not sure that they are what you are looking for...
Im thinking of applying to UB as a safety. Is the school any good?
UB is an excellent school. Great academia vibe and focus on research. What degree are you pursuing? Why is UB your backup? I went to UB for my undergrad, and plan on going after my masters there when I move back (if they'll have me!) I loved my time at UB. There are tons of clubs and activities, and awesome libraries too. It is very much a "commuter" school though - the majority of the students live off campus and drive in to one campus or the other.

We like the Amherst campus. That is another school my daughter got into but is not sure she wants to attend. My husband graduated from there, he loved it!
UB - Amherst Campus is right down the street from where I grew up. Very safe, not much to do, but safe, quaint and the people are the most friendly I have ever known. It is also in the top five party schools in America.

Really? Where did you see that? I'd love to read about it since my daughter had once looked into going there.
I go to Buff State and in general I really like the school. I also like the neighborhood/general area. Im not even in a good program at the school. Im in Engineering Tech. and Buff State really is, at its core, a teachers college. So if you want to go for anything with education, Id def. recommend it. The campus has an interesting mix of buildings from really old (1870's or something) to newer. Its also a little more of a school for local people and its a little more laid back.. compared to UB which is basically an international university
The only complaints I can think of with Buff State is that they are pretty much at maximum capacity so they are turning students away now (11000 last semester, or year, I think) so its probably hard to get accepted right now. They are also trying to create more on-campus dorms since they are putting a couple students up in the Adams mark downtown. It can also be hard to reach an advisor sometimes. Oh also if you are under.. i think 22 or 25 .. unless you live youre parents in the city its apparently mandatory to live in on-campus the first 2 years or something like that. (which I dont consider a bad thing, or a good thing)
