you know about as much about AR as you do about Japan I think. People in AR are praying everyday for 2 more main interstates or highways to be built or extended. One is hwy 49 and the other is the by-pass which was promised with funds from the fed stimulus, but not enough to warrent the building of it. We also would love to see 540 extended into MO, but if we even get the by-pass that won't be as big as issue. These hwys are only for starters. So let's make sure we know what we are talking about before we make stupid statements... I would suggest you come and see for yourself, but please don't. people who are know it alls without knowing what they are talking about are not usually very well recieved..

Percentage of citizens speaking English at home has very little to do with this subject... if at all. If you're referring to illegal immigration, say illegal immigration. Bilingual families are lumped in with illegal immigration way too often. Just because your first language is English doesn't make you any more American than an American citizen who learned English as a second language. Though you try and slip this into your argument as if it has any merit. Is Montana a "better" state because a higher percentage of their residents speak English at home? Are they more responsible? Seriously?

Let's stop taking this in different directions people.

Wholeheartedly agree

This thread is about high speed rail coming to California before any other state. We should be proud that our citizens in 2008 voted for this wonderful improvement in California's transportation system. As always, California is one step ahead of the rest of America. The first state to regulate global warming. California voters took it a step further by insisting on a tax for a bullet train system to be constructed. And it is happening.

All the unnecessary diversions into politics and immigration have nothing to do with the topic. Only the out-of-state haters want to take this great news and bash it like they do with everything about California.

Thats completely understandable! When things need to get done Republicans always 'pray' and hope for divine intervention. But progressive state like CA has a progressive taxation system to ensure things that benefit everyone gets done. The high-speed rail is not a burden on people of CA rather it is a privilege they are going to pay through taxes. So stay in your low tax AR and dream about high-speed rail sitting on your porch!

I will be more than happy to pay higher taxes for good public transit!

It nice to agree with you for a change! Things don't get better unless we make them better and that requires action not prayers!

In less than 10 years trains should be going between Los Angeles and San Francisco: California snags $2.34 billion for bullet trains | Transportation | PE.com | Southern California News | News for Inland Southern California (http://www.pe.com/localnews/transportation/stories/PE_News_Local_W_stimhighspeed29.41a2715.html - broken link)

Here's a great site that shows what the train will look like when moving and all the train stations:

I don't know that I'd hold my breath on that time frame or that budget. It does look pretty cool though.

I could see using the train to take the family from NorCal to Disneyland for a weekend... hell, maybe even just a day trip. Flights might save a little transit time in comparison, but it seems like a train ride might be easier for a family and I'm guessing you might be able to save some time dealing with the airport congestion - not to mention it would be more economical. It actually looks pretty appealing.

The percentage of people speaking English at home, translates to a lot of federal resources utilized due to that situation. And one of the reasons CA has budget problem, and it is not just to pay for esl teachers

The large fedral resources utilized in CA is becouse of the fact that the state governemnet in Sacramento has to divert larger and larger resources to fund cash and revenue strapped local governenments that are not allowed to raise their property taxation to the extent where they can fund them self thanks to prop 13.
And the feds have to step in in order to make upp fort the shortfall in the state budget that is the result of its large diversion of funding to local governments.
