My husband has a job offer for the Templeton/Morrow Bay area and the yearly salary is approx $55,000 a year. We have 3 kids, 2 of them are in school.

We would be looking to rent in either area as he would be working at the Twin Cities Hospital. Is this salary doable?

Any advice would be helpful!
Thanks!

Morro Bay, and Templeton are not the same area.
Morro Bay is on the coast, cool, foggy and expensive.
Templeton is inland, very hot in the summer dry and a bit less expensive.
55,000 is cutting it close, depending on your rent, You don't want your rent to be more than 30% of your income, which in your case is $16,500 per year or $1375 per month. Look very closely at what you can rent for that or less.

One advantage to Templeton is that you can find a home on acreage, grow a garden.

Here, reading comprehension 101, note the use of the word "can". "Can" is not the same as must.
Here; Can, a : know how to <she can read> b : be physically or mentally able to <he can lift 200 pounds> cused to indicate possibility <do you think he can still be alive> <those things can happen> ; sometimes used interchangeably with may

Well, it's a beautiful area in Central California that's for.

A lot really depends on you and your families goals as well as his job growth potential. Is he is doing something entry level which will grow quickly? Or is this position something with lower pay longer term? Can your family live tight for a while on such a wage? What are you accustomed to where you are coming from?

Do a craigslist search in the Templeton area and look at the rental prices. How small of a place can you live with?

I would say it will be very tight but may be doable for a limited season.

Thanks for the advice. We are taking the 45,000, but can ask for more within the 90 day period. There is also a promise that hubby will be in higher position in 6 months. All of this information is in writing which makes me feel better.

I won't say that I'm not nervous living on that low salarry, but I'm forward to the future. I'm hoping to get into the Morrow Bay area where the weather is cooler vs Templeton with the hotter weather. But with the salary issue I'm looking for the best deal on a house so that will determine where we end up.

Does anyone know what's the median salary is in the Templeton/ Morrow Bay area? I keep hearing that it's around $55,000, but I'm not sure.

Our move should happen in 30 days and to be honest I know we need to get the hell out of this state that we are in now. Here hubby has no chance to get a promtion or a raise. I guess we gotta do what we got to do-

Hi Brenna,

At least he has a job offer. That's more than a lot of ppl have in this economy. Glad to hear you got those things in writing as well.

As Highnlite mentioned Templeton and Morro (not Marrow) Bay are separate areas. Morro Bay is on the coast and more expensive. Templeton is inland a bit and more affordable - by California standards anyway.

The median income for a family in Templeton was $58,750 in 2008 according to census data. It only has a population of ~ 5000. So you will probably shop and do things in Paso Robles or San Luis Obispo not to far up/down Hwy 101.

Will your husband be working in/near Templeton? If so you may want to check out Paso Robles and Atascadero for housing as well.

Derek
