BVitamin, Twinkle Toes, BVitamin, Charles and 1200RT, thanks for the responses.

Charles and 1200RT, to answer your questions...

I already live in Thousand Oaks. I've lived in Thousand Oaks and Simi since I was 2, but in the last 18 years literally 99% of the time I've spent in Socal outside of Thousand Oaks has been to the north.

I'm clueless as to what's in and around LA, and I've probably spent less than 10 days anywhere south of downtown.

I love the weather in Thousand Oaks, especially in winter. I'm just sick of it because I can't do anything late at night, and everything to do seems to be north or south.

I work online, so location doesn't matter.

Housing: I don't have a budget. I will be renting. Obviously I don't want to spend more than necessary. Looking at prices in Santa Monica, it seems way more expensive than the surrounding areas. Is it that much better?

No plans for kids or a wive in the next five years, and I probably won't be living here in five years anyway.

1200RT, I rent at SZP & CMA. What do you fly?

Luck has nothing to do with it. I've worked 360 days/year since I was 12.

No, that isn't much better.

Give us an idea on your housing desirements and budget. For example, on the low end, you could rent a room in many places in Southern California for $500 or so. Would that work?
Or, do you need your own place? A studio? Now we're talking significantly over $1000, maybe $1500-$2000 in nicer places (sort of just winging it here).

PS I used to fly at VNY back in the late 1970s. I got my CFI at 19 in 1980. Also, my Instrument, Commercial, and Multi-Engine there too. Used to fly into Santa Susana and San Fernando Airports when they were there.

Here is an absolutely fantastic website on old and abandoned airports. There used to be an airport right near Topanga Plaza. Also, there was one right on the Los Robles Golf Course where 23/101 is now.

Conejo Valley view looking west, 1930s. Moorpark road runs left and right. The road running east and west (perpendicular to Moorpark road) is probably Ventura Boulevard, later renamed Thousand Oaks Boulevard. The airstrip is the first Janss Ranch Airport (Conejo Valley Airport).

Later in 1952, Highway was constructed over it and the airport was moved a little south. In this photo, you can see the new highway, intersected by Moorpark Road, and to the far left, the new airstrip.
