Yes looking at other tests as well, there is significant improvement up and down the state.

Quote:

Results from the 2011 California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) show that public school students are making academic progress despite spending cuts and larger class sizes.

The results, released last week by the Department of Education, also show more seniors are earning their diplomas and more sophomores are passing the tests on their first try.

Approximately 94.6 percent of the class of 2011 — about 442,000 students statewide — passed the exit exam by their senior year, an 0.2-percent increase over the class of 2010.

Let's hope so, since the CAHSEE is a tenth grade proficiency test and students have five chances to pass the exam by the time they finish their senior year.

It scaled for 10th Grade proficiency? When I took it, I thought it was a test for the average 8th grader at best.

It is an 8th grade proficiency test. The students only have to get 55% of the multiple choice math and reading comprehension questions correct. The essay portion of the test is a personal narrative and asks the student to give their opinion about some issue or situation. It is a very easy test that has about 78 questions in math and about the same number for reading comprehension. Passing will be about 42 correct and 36 incorrect = an F grade in any teacher's gradebook. Each student has 5 chances to pass each section. Special education students must take it once and are waived from having to pass it to earn a regular high school diploma. If your son or daughter cannot pass this test to earn a diploma, simply have them tested and put into special education where the test is waived.

It's a tenth grade proficiency test for English and an 8th grade proficiency test for math, which assumes the student has taken geometry.

The essay portion provides a question that will prompt the student to write a persuasive essay, a business letter, a biography, a reaction to literature, or an analysis on the subject of the question. The prompt is different with each exam.

The student would have to be assessed and determined to have a learning disability as well as have an active IEP to qualify for special education.

The state tests are minimum proficiency tests - at best.

How are the SAT and ACT scores? Those are better indicators.

It looks as if average SAT scores are declining nationwide, as well as in California. Reading scores are the lowest on record, according to this. This may be due to the fact that more students are taking the test. Not sure what the other factors are.
