A lot of places were considered pretty 'redneck' as recently as the mid-90s (example: Santee, CA) ... But these days when I go visit family there, it just seems like just another box-store-burbia to me. Kind of sad actually, IMO. Where'd the rednecks go?

Anyone know anything about Sierra City? It looked kinda hillbillyish when I passed through on Route 49, the Mother Lode Highway.

Santee has grown a lot over the last few years, but Lakeside(Santee's neighbor) and a majority of East San Diego County are very redneck and conservative. There are still lots of huge mega churches out there. I don't think its a good thing. Perhaps you haven't visited enough lately because it's still very much redneck.

My most recent visit was April 2014. I don't spend a lot of time on Lakeside, El Cajon, etc. and similar places while I'm there, but I can see why they may seem more "redneck". If you're going by the notion that 'poor+white=redneck' (btw: is "hillbilly" any more/less offensive?) then some statistics will agree with you as well. Although the hispanic population is also pretty large out there too, for obvious reasons. (not saying whether that's good or bad, just stating fact)

In any case, it;s a matter of context, if you're comparing Lakeside to Santee, or say, Universtiy Heights, then yep it's pretty darn redneckity. But if you're comparing lakeside 2014 to lakeside 1974 (or even '85 or '94) then not as much.

Yes there is a large hispanic population in the Spring Valley/Lemon Grove/La Mesa area of East County. Those places are more urban-like and closer to the San Diego city limits. In El Cajon and Rancho San Diego there is a very large Chaldean population. Outside of that though, East County is rather plain. Lakeside and other parts of East County are pretty much blue collar. Yes, you can find large expensive homes but you'll also find numerous trailer parks out there(nothing wrong with that). Meth is a problem out there too. I'm a youngster in my early twenties so I can't comment on what it was like in the 1970s or 1980s.

Oh yes, I forgot... nominal christians of Iraqi (or other?) middle-eastern descent who have settled into San Diego and other areas, often due to religious displacement. ... right?

Not that all 'hillbillies" or "rednecks" are this way, but lately seems like if you just browse the relocation threads these days, there are often a surprising number of SoCal folks on "Section 8, Disability, etc." looking for "more affordable" digs. And at least judging by the growing homeless and welfare problem here in Chico and parts nearby, the perception is that 'gentrification' is simply 'relocating' our underclass population to either rural NorCal, or else farther north to Oregon.

Like the rock church that meets downtown. LMAO. Or the Mosque off Balboa and the 805 both "mega churches". Odd I didn't see any neck looking types. I was extremely disappointed based on the apparent fabrications and hyperbole in this thread.
