My wife recently got an internship in Modesto, but the crime looks to be quite extreme. Los Angeles, where I live, looks quite tame by comparison.

We need a place to live for 3 months, and aren't sure:

A.) What cities to live in, what areas are good, etc.
B.) What apartments might be good/decent, ideally ones that are furnished and offer something short-term. We'd be willing to pay extra.

It looks like Ripon is a fairly quiet and safe area, but it's hard to find out much about the place. Google Maps only shows ~4/5 apartments in that city.

Also, what areas in Modesto should be avoided? Are there any do's / don'ts, besides "don't be white" ?

Ripon, Manteca, Escalon, Oakdale would be my first choices.

Modesto compared to L.A will be generally safer depending on the area just like L.A.

Key to Modesto North and East.

Thanks. Yeah, it looks like the Mall (near Trader Joes) is where it starts to get semi-safe. Though crime still manages to stretch up there a bit.

It's everywhere just like LA.

Just stick to the higher rated Apartment and Condo complexes and you'll be fine.

You live in LA and you're worried about little ol' Modesto?! Stick to the north side of town and you'll be fine. If you're really worried try Oakdale. Its just 15 miles away.

Don't be white in Modesto? Says who? Illegal Mexicans on welfare?
