I'm moving to the Modesto area. Last time I was in Modesto was about 20 years ago. I know there have been tons of change. I need your thoughts and experience on the area. I have read many posts on the crime...this is very concerning as I have 4 children from 2yrs to 12yrs. Your thoughts and time to respond to this question is greatly appreciated.

Anywhere but modesto. Consider Oakdale, Turlock, Ripon, Escalon. All better cities and better school districts, especially Oakdale and Ripon.

Oakdale.

/thread.

Well, actually not "/thread", but I did live there for seven years as a kid and have been in and out of there my whole life. Its one of the best towns in inland California in my opinion. If you have a job in Modesto its a very easy commute (just 15-20 miles).

Yeah, don't. Scenic spot, but not as nice a town as Oakdale.

Agreed. Lived in oakdale for about 7 years (2003-2010). My wife's family is still there. Oakdale is a nice little small town that is fairly safe, easy commute distance from modesto and has a good school district. There are some great bargins to be had there especially if you can find a house in the Burchell Hill neighborhood (one of the best designed neighborhoods in the area during the boom). We left because i lost my job in the area and relocated to the central coast for my new gig. (i know upgrade)

Oakdale wasn't our cup of tea (the valley in general) but we made the most of it there.

Years ago i used to drive thru Oakdale going to visit family in Jamestown & Sonora. Oakdale smelled like Hershey chocolate.
It was a nice town. Maybe it still is?

House Of Beef
A smaller candy company from the Bay Area bought it (the one that makes Jordan Almonds). Not as big a workforce as Hershey, but at least they didn't pack up and move to Mexico on 'em (like Hershey did).
